Great design: music video

Man, I wish I had paid more attention in high school Spanish. Actually, it’s cool to see a work like this in a language I don’t understand, because it really separates design from content. Notice how you can tell smart and funny things are happening, even if you can’t tell what they’re saying?

For the record, this song is “Ya No Sé Que Hacer Conmigo” by Cuarteto de Nos. If you can understand Spanish, read the lyrics here.

PC Decrapifier - You’re My Hero

How can I not be in love with something called a decrapifier? Although I kinda need the “life” version, I was super excited to get the PC version. PC World did a piece called “Junkbusters”. It’s about all that crap that comes installed on your computer that most people don’t need or want. I am super sensitive to advertising and I hate that the makers use computers as an advertising tool for their crappy products. The article mentions a few ways to get rid of this stuff and the PC Decrapifier is one way.

21 “free” photo galleries

Free Beer TomorrowI’ll give you a hint: you already have these photo galleries included in your dirty, stolen completely legal copy of Photoshop CS2. These galleries give you a way of easily making web pages that hold lots of thumbnail photos, each linking to a full size version of the image.

We’ve been looking for a good way to display the content of the Ancillary Factory portfolio, which is basically four separate image galleries. Go ahead. Check it out right now. I’ll wait.

Internet explorer is a jerk: css hacks

Jerk SauceInternet Explorer 6 is a jerk. It’s one of the first things I discovered upon coming to web design from the video world. Video production has its weirdness, but once you render something, you don’t have to worry about people’s TVs changing your font sizes or column alignments behind your back.

Anyway, I’ve been looking for a good way to send one CSS rule to IE6 and another to the rest of the free world (the standards-compliant browsers like Firefox). Like most design-related things, there are about a million ways to do it, but I have a favorite: the [id] attribute.

stick it to the robots: email munging

Spam-boyI’ve always been reluctant to use my actual e-mail address on a webpage because of all those stories about evil robots that scour the Inter-puters for the ‘@’ symbol and want to sign me up for a lifetime of male enhancement or low-interest mortgages.

On the other hand, I like it when sites include the actual e-mail address of the person I need to talk

Hey, we just finished the new Trim Barbershop website. For reference, take a look at the old site. And if you live in Springfield, get a haircut. You look like a pirate.

For the love of God. I would like to speak to the person who decided it was a good idea to have a dancing human, bad dancing human, in that Popeye’s chicken ad. The song, with that whole ‘tell me what’s your flavor’ crap, is freakin annoying. Apparently the song is a condensed and remixed version of a Craig David song. The song sounds like it was made with one of those kiddy keyboards. Ya know the ones with

In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the best three minutes of TV this year. It’s the SNL Digital Short where Andy Samberg punches people in the face right before they take a bite of food.

I love a lot of things about this video:

Time Magazine Invention of the Year. Really?

Time CoverOk, so I used to be one of those Mac “people.” Not exactly a fanboy…girl….whatever, however I did believe they were better for “creative” stuff. I currently have a G4, G5, iPod, iPod nano and an old ass iBook all of which is destined for the e-bay very soon. Having said that, I feel I am more than qualified to bash Apple a little if I want. They do have a lot of my money. I enjoy a good Apple. However, about a year and a half ago I had this bag of self awareness that smacked me upside the head. I had become brand loyal.

Stop complaining. Start kvetching.

kvetch-kid.jpgThis one’s for those of us who like Yiddish, complaining, and complaining in Yiddish about crap we don’t like. I have nothing bad to say about Wordpress (although I haven’t been using it that long), but I just found an interactive kvetching feature that not only lets you bitch about a Wordpress-related problem, you can randomly read other people’s bitching, which for some reason, makes me feel better. Hear me now, every software company: You need this.

If you’re not sure what a kvetch is, here’s the definition, or you can e-mail me at jon@ancillaryfactory.com, and you’ll know in about 10 minutes.

Open Source Reviews

the internet’s broke

We’re a little slow getting our Open-Source reviews off the ground, due to a problem with our Godaddy Hosting Account that won’t let us make any new MySQL databases. I don’t know what the crap that means, but it means we can’t install any new programs on the server until it gets fixed. They do actually have really good customer service (although no 800#) , and hopefully it will be working in the next couple of days. So keep your horse’s pants on. On the plus side, Kelly was sent this heartfelt .jpg by the support team.

UPDATE: It’s fixed now.  Thanks to Godaddy for getting on that.

I made my first-ever blog post last week–the one about ways to embed a form on a webpage. I talked for a while about Zoho Creator, which is a cool system for taking form data and putting it into an online database. It really does kick ass, but I wondered whether a company putting this much time into a free program can make any money.

We have done exactly nothing to publicize this site.
